When Jesus Is in Your Boat: Faith in the Middle of the Storm

Text: Matthew 8:23–27 (KJV)

God’s silence does not mean His absence

Introduction

There are moments in life when everything seems calm… until suddenly, the sky grows dark. The wind begins to rage, the waves crash without mercy, and the heart fills with uncertainty.

No matter where you are in the world, we all face storms: unexpected situations, inner struggles, family crises, or seasons where our faith is tested.

In Matthew 8:23–27, the disciples experienced something that not only shook their boat… but also their trust. And in the middle of that chaos, they discovered a truth that still transforms lives today.

Development

1. Following Jesus does not exempt you from storms

“And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him…”

The disciples were not outside of God’s will. On the contrary, they were following Jesus. Yet, the storm came.

This teaches us something profound: walking with Christ does not mean the absence of problems, but the presence of purpose in the midst of them.

2. Storms reveal the condition of our faith

“…and, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea…”

The storm did not only shake the sea; it exposed what was inside the disciples. Fear rose to the surface.

The same happens to us. In times of calm, our faith seems strong. But it is in the middle of the storm where we truly discover what we are trusting in.

3. God’s silence does not mean His absence

“…but he was asleep.”

What a powerful and unsettling image. While everything seems to be falling apart, Jesus is asleep.

How many times have you felt that way? You pray, you cry out, you wait… but you don’t see an immediate answer.

Yet there is a truth that sustains the soul:
Jesus was in the boat.

Even when He seemed silent… He was present.

4. Crying out to God is an act of faith, not weakness

“Lord, save us: we perish!”

This was not a structured prayer. It was a desperate cry.

And that is also faith.

God is not looking for perfect words, but for sincere hearts that recognize their need for Him.

5. Jesus confronts your fear before calming your storm

“Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?”

Before rebuking the wind, Jesus addressed the hearts of His disciples.

Because the real problem was not the external storm… but the internal doubt.

Then, with divine authority, He calmed the sea, and there was a great calm.

6. Every storm has a purpose: to reveal who Jesus is

“What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”

This experience left a mark on them. He was no longer just the Teacher… He was the Lord over all.

Storms, as difficult as they are, have an eternal purpose: to lead you into a deeper knowledge of Christ.

Conclusion

Storms are inevitable, but they do not have the power to destroy you when Jesus is with you.

Maybe today you are facing a difficult situation. Maybe you feel fear, uncertainty, or even God’s silence.

But remember this:
If Jesus is in your boat, you are not adrift.

The storm does not define your end… Christ’s presence does.
